The connection of women and the moon is strong.\u00a0 As Robin Wall Kimmerer says in relating \u201cThe Words That Come Before Else,\u201d \u201cWe put our minds together and give thanks to our oldest Grandmother, the Moon, who lights the nighttime sky.\u00a0 She is the leader of women all over the world. . . . \u201c[iv]<\/a>\u00a0 In cultures around the world, the moon has been celebrated as grandmother, mother, goddess, and protector of women \u2013 the Greek Artemis, the Dinka Abuk, the Zulu iNyang, the Celtic Cerridwen, the Chinese Chang\u2019e, the Aztec Coyolxauhqu, the Roman Luna, the Thracian Bendis, to name just a few. Women around the world celebrate the moon in full moon ceremonies and new moon ceremonies.\u00a0 The stages of women\u2019s lives \u2013 maiden, mother, and crone \u2013 have also been linked to the stages of the moon \u2013 waxing, full, and waning. The moon has long been associated with the female and femininity due to the strong correlation between the lunar cycles and women\u2019s menstrual cycles \u2013 hence the common root, mensis<\/em>, for our words for \u201cmonth,\u201d \u201cmoon,\u201d and \u201cmenstruation,\u201d the last known among the indigenous peoples of North America as \u201cmoon time.\u201d Is this concurrence of women\u2019s cycles and the moon\u2019s cycles really just coincidence? It is a striking association \u2013 the pull of the moon on the waters of the world, on the wombs of women.\u00a0 Is it any wonder women have long felt so connected to the moon?” Beth Bartlett\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
