Only women could truly legitimize the ali\u02bbi \u02bbai \u02bb\u0101ina, the ruling chiefs, because they embodied <a><\/a>the pilina (sacred connection) between ancestors and descendants, between p\u014d (night, origin) and ao (day, emergence) thus lines of chiefs were matrilineal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The priestly calendar of Kal\u0101kaua\u2019s Hale Nau\u0101 society did not measure time by the reign of kings but by the birth of La\u02bbila\u02bbi, the first woman, the generative womb of all chiefs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even the word for womb, p\u016b\u02bbao (shell of light), speaks to the radiant, ancestral sanctity of female creation, echoed in the Kumulipo, where life spirals outward from the depths of p\u014d. The most irreplaceable figures in the chiefly court were the wives, mothers, and sisters. They were not mere attendants but the foundation of dynastic legitimacy thus Kamehameha I had unions with many powerful chiefly women. The powerful position of kuhina nui \u2014 a premier balancing the king\u2019s rule \u2014 was repeatedly held by women like Ka\u02bbahumanu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The arrival of Western traders and Calvinist missionaries violently collided with this Indigenous order. The patriarchy they brought sought to subordinate women and erase their political authority. When Kuhina Nui Ka\u02bbahumanu tried to outlaw the trafficking of Hawaiian women in the 1820s, American and European sailors erupted in riots, demanding the \u201cright\u201d to access and exploit Native women\u2019s bodies. The colonial project began by seizing women\u2019s autonomy \u2014 their mana \u2014 and once Hawaiian women were turned into commodities, land followed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Hawaiian thought, land was never owned; the people belonged to the land, as children belong to a mother. Haumea, Papa, the divine earth mothers, could not be possessed. But when a woman could be made into property, so too could \u02bb\u0101ina. The dispossession of Hawaiian land was born from the dispossession of Hawaiian women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So when we speak of sovereignty, of land back, of decolonization, we must center mana w\u0101hine. There is no true aloha \u02bb\u0101ina without rematriation \u2014 the restoration of women\u2019s role in land stewardship.
