Why is it Important to Honor your Ancestors? Why Should You Build an Ancestor Altar?

But here is the truth few acknowledge: if you escape without healing, you simply pass the pain down dressed as success.

A parent who builds wealth but never learns to regulate their nervous system may hand down anxiety, perfectionism, or disconnection. A family that accumulates property but ignores the health of the soil may leave behind land that is barren. A parent who teaches their child how to “succeed” but never shows them how to feel may pass down silent trauma, the kind that festers unseen. – Seven Dimensions of Generational Wealth: Why We Need Wise Ancestors, Not Rich Families

From a good friend of mine Marie Nazon speaking of her ancestors:

“I fell asleep … and I had such a sweet dream where I got to say goodbye to my Aunt.

And my dad was in the dream …

He was there to welcome her back.

You know we have a welcoming committee on the other side.”

Create an Ancestor Altar

An ancestor altar is a dedicated space created to honor and connect with one’s ancestors. It can be set up with a group of friends or relatives and is decorated with flowers, fruits, images of the Goddess, and items that remind you of your specific ancestors. The altar may also include pitchers for pouring libations—such as water, wine, or honey—as offerings. During rituals, individuals approach the altar, name their ancestors, express gratitude or acknowledge both the positive and negative aspects of their ancestors’ legacies, and pour libations as a symbolic act. The ritual may conclude with collective blessings and songs, reinforcing the connection to the Source of Life and the cycles of birth, death, and regeneration. The ancestor altar serves as a tangible way to embody gratitude, remembrance, and healing within a spiritual or earth-based practice.

“There’s something about having an ancestor altar that connects us to them energetically. We give them space. We give them light. … It also gives us comfort, too.” – Marie Nazon

“In my blood
in my bones
I hear your voice
I hear your call”
